Thinly sliced, tossed in a bit of flour and fried. Good alternative to croutons in a salad or a crust for a steak or chicken.

I like to slice them and arrange them artfully on a nice clean white surface.

  4. I have many, but one is to flavor bacon! I peel, slice in half, then let it sit in the pan once the fat starts to render. It flavors the fat which, in turn, flavors your bacon!

Fried are delicious but I can’t really fry anything at home. Pickled and in sauces are also great.

So are shallots just the middles of red onions?? (Probably a very stupid question)

In salad, or in a quiche. I also like to sautee them lightly in some butter, deglaze with white wine, and mix with lemon juice and sardines to put over pasta.

We made a killer dark balsamic vinaigrette and used carmelied shallots and garlic….so darn tasty!

Caramelized, with tomato paste and Calabrian chili oil mixed in, over fresh pasta. 🤤

My favorite is to use cook them with other aromatics. Because that’s all they are

Mignonette? Vodka sauce? Asian grocery near me often has bags of shallots the subs of large grapes which are great roasted with other veg or in a braise instead of pearl onions.

Unpopular ope’onion but maybe you should shall’let them be them/their selves

  14. We have a recipe for curried eggs that used shallots garlic and ginger with canned tomatoes, turmeric, jalapeño and cumin. I wish I could reference it on a website but it’s probably 20+ years old. I know that’s a lot of flavor but the shallots really shine

I got introduced to them because a meal kit service uses them in a sherry-based sauce to accompany steak. They could’ve skipped the steak. I would have a half-gallon of that stuff if I could. Thanks for aiding my hunt for more uses of shallot 🙂

I use shallots for almost everything that doesnt require the more robust basic yellow onion. Soups, salads, sandwiches… raw, sautéed, fried, caramelized, quick pickled. My favourite onions, so yummy!
